About the Prize

In October 2009 the EurOcean approved the creation of Movie Prize conferred to a student or a team of students to reward an original Movie related to the marine environment. This Prize intents to raise public awareness to the importance of the Ocean and the Ocean related services to Humankind. It was also agreed that the Prize should be named "Professor Mário Ruivo Prize" as a tribute to the first President of EurOcean, who held the position between 2002 and 2008, and as recognition of his work as a pioneer on the sciences of the sea and marine research at national, European, and international level. |
About Professor Mário Ruivo
Professor Mário Ruivo is a trained biologist (Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, 1950), specialized in Biological Oceanography and Management of Marine Living Resources (University of Paris Sorbonne, Laboratoire Arago: 1951-54). He was Director of the Division of Aquatic Resources and the Environment of the Department of Fisheries of FAO (1961-74), and participated in United Nations Conference on Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972). He was also Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO (1980-89) where he was elected Vice-President in 2003, and Invited Professor at the University of Porto / ICBAS (Course Policy and Management of Ocean). He is currently the President of the National Council for Environment and Sustainable Development (CNADS) and President of the Intersectorial Oceanographic Commission of the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education COI/MCTES. Professor Mário Ruivo has received numerous awards, the last of which was in 2010 when he was proclaimed Doctor "Honoris Causa" by the University of Azores, in recognition of his career achievements.
Participation Criteria
- The Participants must be a student or a student team, with an age range from 12 to 18 years old - Junior category or, with an age range from 18 to 21 years old - Senior category. In the case of minors of age an Adult Advisor is required.
- All Movies must be European, i.e. made in a European Country.
- The Movies must be completed within the Qualifying Period. Entry forms must be fully completed, signed, and, together with a standard DVD, posted to EurOcean no later than 25th March 2012.
- Only Movies on the following allowed file types: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, FLV, WMV, AVI, MP4, MOV, will be accepted.
- The Movie must have a maximum size of 700 MB.
- Movies should be no longer than 15 minutes in length.

Entry Form
Entry forms must be fully completed, signed, and, together with a standard DVD, posted to EurOcean no later than 25th March 2012.
