| Alliance of Regional Maritime Interests in Europe (AMRIE) The Alliance of Maritime Regional Interests in Europe (AMRIE) was founded in 1993 as an initiative of members of the European Parliament to provide all maritime regional with a co-ordinated and effective political voice to achieve an "Integrated Maritime Strategy". 22 MEPs are sponsoring AMRIE. The 55 AMRIE members fall into four general categories: regional authorities, professionnal organisations and trade unions, regional infrastructures and centers of excellence, industry and trade associations. AMRIE has created five Specialist Working Groups dealing with short Sea Shipping and intermodality, maritime economic development, shipping quality, centres of excellence (research and training), marine environmental care. |
| Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) The Helsinki Commission, or HELCOM, works to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution through intergovernmental co-operation between Denmark, Estonia, the European Community, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. HELCOM is the governing body of the "Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area" - more usually known as the Helsinki Convention, which was signed in 1974. Six Groups and a Task Force address specific tasks and sources of pollution: monitoring and assessment group; land-based pollution group; maritime group; response group; nature conservation and coastal zone management group; strategy group; programme implementation task force. HELCOM's decisions on measures to address certain pollution sources or areas of concern are mainly made as Recommendations. They are to be implemented by the Contracting Parties through their national legislation. The activities of HELCOM are carried out by a secretariat located in Helsinki and staffed with 14 persons. | Conference of the Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR) The CPMR's membership includes 150 Regions from 27 States - both members and non-members of the EU - all located in one of Europe's main sea basins. They have chosen to open up towards the international scene and join transnational cooperation networks as a way of strengthening their competitiveness. The CPMR was founded in Saint-Malo in 1973 with a view to: 1) exploiting together their common assets - the sea and the coastline - and contributing towards a greater enhancement of Europe's maritime dimension; 2) creating awareness among the European authorities of the need to fight major disparities in competitiveness between the central part of Europe and its peripheries; 3) ensuring greater involvement of the regional level in European integration. The CPMR's activities are both political and operational: 1) the CPMR creates awareness among EU institutions to take better account of territorial specificities when drawing up European policies and legislation. 2) Source of working information, the CPMR examines the main current affairs within the European Union. 3) The CPMR and its Geographical Commissions contribute towards creating partnerships, setting up projects and networking territories. | Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR) The OSPAR Commission is an international intergovernmental organisation established to protect the marine environment in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, of which 15 European countries and the EC are members. The Contracting Parties agree to take all possible steps to prevent and eliminate pollution and to take the necessary measures to protect the maritime area against the adverse effects of human activities so as to safeguard human health and to conserve marine ecosystems and, when practicable, restore marine areas which have been adversely affected. ASMO and Terms of Reference for the Committees. OSPAR has established five strategy Committees on Assessment and Monitoring, Hazardous Substances, Eutrophication and Biodiversity which have one or more subsidiary working. Reports are annually published on the basis of the data and information collected from the Contracting Parties. The Commission is administered by a Secretariat based in London. |
| ESF Marine Board The ESF Marine Board was set up in October 1995 in order to improve co-ordination between European marine science organisations and to develop long-term marine scientific strategies in Europe. It is an informal, non governmental organisation composed of 24 marine research organisations from 16 European countries. The ESF Marine Board has the following objectives: 1) forum: bringing together member organisations to share information, to identify common problems and, as appropriate, find solutions, to develop common positions, and to co-operate. 2) Strategy: identifying and prioritising emergent disciplinary and interdisciplinary marine scientific issues of strategic European importance, initiating analysis and studies (where relevant, in close association with the European Commission) in order to develop a European strategy for marine research. 3) Expressing a collective vision of the future for European marine science in relation to developments in Europe and world-wide, and improving the public understanding of science in these fields. 4) Synergy: fostering European added value to component national programmes, facilitating access and shared use of national marine research facilities, and promoting synergy with international programmes and organisations. | EUCC - The Coastal Union The Coastal Union is an association with members and member organisations in 40 countries. EUCC was founded in 1989 with the aim of promoting coastal conservation by bridging the gap between scientists, environmentalists, site managers, planners and policy makers. EUCC's mission is to promote coastal management that integrates biodiversity conservation with those forms of development that sustain the integrity of landscapes, the cultural heritage and the social fabric of our coasts taking into account the effects of climate change. | EuroGOOS EuroGOOS is an Association of Agencies, founded in 1994, to further the goals of the Global Ocean Observing systems (GOOS), and in particular the development of Operational Oceanography in the European Sea areas and adjacent oceans. EuroGOOS at present has 40 Members in 19 European countries. | European Co-operation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) COST - European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research - is one of the longest-running European instruments supporting cooperation among scientists and researchers across Europe. COST is also the first and widest European intergovernmental network for coordination of nationally funded research activities. |
| European Environment Agency (EEA) The EEA was created by the Euroepean Union in 1990 and is operational since 1994. Its core task is to provide decision-makers with the information needed for making sound and effective policies to protect the environment and support sustainable development. The information provided by the EEA focuses in particular on assessing the current and future state of the environment across Europe and the pressures upon it. The Agency's tasks also include disseminating best practice in environmental protection and technologies, and supporting the European Commission in diffusing information on the results of environmental research. The EEA does not make or enforce European Union environment policy or legislation: this is the responsibility of the European Commission and the other EU institutions. The EEA currently has 31 member countries from Europe. The office is located in Copenhagen with a staff of 100 persons and annual budget of approximately 25 MEuro. |
| European Federation of Marine Science and Technology Societies (EFMS) EFMS founded in December 1998 in Paris, consists of 8 non-governmental scientific European associations specialised in research and education around marine environment. The objectives of the Federation are: 1) to contribute to the advancement of research and education in marine science and technology; 2) to disseminate information to promote the advancement of marine science and technology in Europe. Two Working Groups have been established on history of oceanography and on comparison of European marine science education. |
| European Marine Research Stations Network (MARS) The MARS network, funded in 1994, is a non-profit foundation that unites Europe's marine laboratories, scattered over many countries. Its members are located all over Europe, along the shores of the Atlantic, the North, Irish, Baltic and Adriatic Seas, and the Black and Mediterranean Seas. 40 marine stations and institutes are members of MARS. The MARS Network serves as the backbone in order to achieve the long-term and large-scale research that is needed to answer some of the most important questions in biodiversity for which an important concertation and co-ordination is required. MARS is currently revising its rules of operation as the Network hopes to associate with as many laboratories and individuals in Europe as possible in the field of marine biodiversity research. | European Space Agency (ESA) The ESA membership includes 10 founding members from the largest Western European countries. One of the ESA activities is dedicated to the earth environment. The ESRIN Centre, Frascati, Italy, is the ESA's main centre for Earth observation, harvesting images and data from ESA's own ERS-2 satellite and Envisat, and pooling them with observations from the French-led SPOT series and from American, Russian and Japanese satellites. ESRIN is also the information systems centre for ESA and the channel for public information. ESA has dedicated a web page to hazards and risks in the marine environment, including coastal zone monitoring and management. |
| Euroscience Euroscience is a pan-European platform for scientists, engineers, students and all those interested in science (including all the natural sciences and mathematics, engineering , medical and social sciences and the humanities) and technology, especially to provide a voice for these communities (whether in academia, industry or government sponsored laboratories), to promote a dialogue between science and society, to facilitate cooperation and thus contribute to the integration of European science, to further collaboration between European scientific institutions and, finally, to promote a sense of European identity among its members. Our activities have to be tested against this objective. Euroscience has a number of key strengths, one of the most important being its wide presence and, therefore, influence across Europe with its membership coming from 40 countries. Euroscience can be said to "reach the parts other organisations do not reach". This extended "reach" has been achieved through local sections' activities, working groups' activities and its membership. It is a grassroots organisation and its pronouncements have a legitimacy coming from this source. |
| International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea (CIESM) Launched in 1910, CIESM is one of the oldest and most enduring scientific intergovernmental organisations in the world. The Commission is currently funded by 22 Member States which support the work of a large scientific network - some 500 institutes and over 2500 researchers united by a commitment to promote marine science for the lasting protection of the Mediterranean Sea and for the well-being of its coastal populations. |
| International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) ICES is an intergovernmental organisation created in 1902 with 19 member countries from European countries, United States of America and Russia. ICES is a leading forum for the promotion, coordination, and dissemination of research on the physical, chemical, and biological systems in the North Atlantic and advice on human impact on its environment, in particular fisheries effects in the Northeast Atlantic. ICES works with an international community of over 1600 marine scientists and has working rroups discussing most aspects of the marine ecosystem: from physical processes, water chemistry and pollutants up to top-level predators such as seabirds and marine mammals. ICES is the prime source of advice on the marine ecosystem to governments and international regulatory bodies that manage the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas. | WEGEMT WEGEMT, a European Association of 42 Universities in 17 countries. Formed in 1978 with the aim of increasing the knowledge base, and updating and extending the skills and competence of practicing engineers and postgraduate students working at an advanced level in marine technology and related sciences. WEGEMT openly collaborates with organisations outside its Association. It is keen to work with industry, professional bodies, classification societies, and other organisations and societies who are involved with marine technology. In a similar vein, WEGEMT is particularly keen to support and encourage the programmes of Research and Development (R&D), Education and Training (E&T), and Information Exchange and Dissemination, of the European Commission where they target marine technology. WEGEMT builds on the core business of its Associates to deliver a range of services including research and training project management, the coordination and delivery of high quality training events, workshops and seminars, provision of experts for project participation or evaluation. | Mediterranean Global Ocean Observing System (MEDGOOS) The Mediterranean Global Ocean Observing System is an informal association founded under the auspices of the UNESCO/Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to provide a concerted approach to the planning and implementation of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) in the Mediterranean.The MedGOOS aims to facilitate the development of an operational ocean observing and forecasting system at a regional to coastal scale to the benefit of a wide group of users in the region. |

| Mutlidisciplinary Oceanographic Research in the Eastern Boundary of the North Atlantic (MORENA) MORENA is sponsored by the CEC MAST-2 Programme and has a general objective to measure, understand and model shelf-ocean exchange in a typical coastal upwelling region of the eastern boundary layer of the subtropical ocean. This is being attained through a multidisciplinary approach aimed at the quantitative understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes involved in the transfer of matter (including salt, particulates, nutrients, organic compounds, biomass), momentum and energy across and along the shelf, the shelf break and the slope, in the Iberian region of the European Atlantic. | North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO) The North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission - is an international body for cooperation on the conservation, management and study of marine mammals in the North Atlantic. The NAMMCO Agreement, which was signed in Nuuk, Greenland on 9 April 1992 by Norway, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, focuses on modern approaches to the study of the marine ecosystem as a whole, and to understanding better the role of marine mammals in this system. |
| North Sea Benthos Survey (NSBS) The analyses presented here are the result of the 1986 North Sea Benthos Survey, an activity of the Benthos Ecology Working Group of ICES. Benthic samples were taken in a standardised way, on a regular grid covering the whole of the North Sea, and analysed by scientists from 10 laboratories. Extensive work was done to standardise taxonomy and identifications across the different laboratories. A total of just over 1000 species were reported from 235 stations. | Promoting a Network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the North-East Atlantic Launched in spring 1999, the WWF project on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the North-East Atlantic Ocean is now operational. Its scope is confined to the OSPAR Maritime Area which reaches from territorial waters (12 nautical miles) to Exclusive Economic Zones (200 nm) and the High Seas beyond. The EU Common Fisheries Policy, the Norwegian Fisheries Policy and the Icelandic Fisheries Policy apply to respective parts of this area. The EU Habitats Directive and the establishment of Natura 2000 - a network of protected areas across the whole of the European Community - provide a first framework for the protection of coastal and marine wildlife. However, the protection afforded to the offshore, pelagic and deep sea marine environment in this context is extremely limited. |
| NOrth sea Model Advection Dispersion Study The subject of the study is an intercomparison of advection-dispersion models for the North West European continental shelf presently available and being used at various institutes within the European Union.The objectives are:to compare the spatial and temporal coherence of the simulation results for a well-defined realistic test case to assess whether the differences between models are within the bounds of (natural) variation the comparison of the characteristics of the advection-dispersion models by direct point-to- point comparison of the model results for an idealised 3-dimensional test case. | North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) The North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) is an international organization established under the Convention for the Conservation of Salmon in the North Atlantic Ocean which came into effect on 1 October 1983. There are seven contracting parties to NASCO, including the European Union. The Organisation is made up of three regional Commissions, the North American Commission, North-East Atlantic Commission and the West Greenland Commission. NASCO also has 26 Non-Government Organisations with observer status and Inter-Governmental Organisations and media representatives may also attend NASCO meetings. |
