- Spain has a coastline of 6.584 km.
- 60% of the Spanish population lives in coastal regions.
- Spanish territory includes the Canary Island archipelago and the African autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.
Maritime Activities
- Spain has the biggest EU fleet in terms of tonnage (480.000 GT), more than twice the tonnage of the 2nd largest and 25% of the EU total.
- The fishing fleet is composed of almost 13.400 vessels. Half of the fleet is registered in Galician ports.
- Spain is the leader country in the EU in terms of total fish production and in terms of value.
- Spanish aquaculture is the major contibutor to the EU aquaculture production (2nd in quantity and 5th in value in 2005).
- Spanish Shipbuilding industry is the 4th in the EU, specialized in fishing and factory vessels and research vessels.
- In 2006 Coastal and marine tourism accounted 53.3 million tourists.
