Spain has a coastline of 6.584 km.
60% of the Spanish population lives in coastal regions.
Spanish territory includes the Canary Island archipelago and the African autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

Maritime Activities

Spain has the biggest EU fleet in terms of tonnage (480.000 GT), more than twice the tonnage of the 2nd largest and 25% of the EU total.
The fishing fleet is composed of almost 13.400 vessels. Half of the fleet is registered in Galician ports.
Spain is the leader country in the EU in terms of total fish production and in terms of value.
Spanish aquaculture is the major contibutor to the EU aquaculture production (2nd in quantity and 5th in value in 2005).
Spanish Shipbuilding industry is the 4th in the EU, specialized in fishing and factory vessels and research vessels.
In 2006 Coastal and marine tourism accounted 53.3 million tourists.
