- Malta has a coastline of 173 km.
- Maltese Short Sea shipping prevails over ocean shipping with 92% of the sea transport (2005).
- The Maltese fishing fleet is made of aproximately 1400 vessels. Most of these vessels are small scale coastal vessels built according to traditional design.
Maritime Activities
- Malta is the 8th largest register in the world and the 2nd largest in Europe with over 1500 merchant vessels flying the Maltese flag (2005).
- The Port of Valleta is a major harbour for cruise liners sailing in the Mediterranean.
- The production of fisheries and aquaculture amount to over 2.000 tonnes per year.
- The value of the aquaculture sector is €4.3 million (2005).
