Created by decree of 5 June 1984, modified on 18 February 1998, Ifremer is a public institute of industrial and commercial nature. From January 2002, it is placed under the joint supervision of four ministries: Research, Agriculture and Fisheries; Transport and Housing; Environment. IFREMER is the only French organisation with an exclusively maritime vocation. Its fields of activity are: coastal environment management; marine living resource management; ocean research; engineering and marine technology; managing ocean research vessels and tools for underwater intervention. The Institute is located in 5 centres (Boulogne, Brest, Nantes, Toulon, Tahiti) and in twenty or so stations linked to those centres. The head office is near Paris (Issy-les-Moulineaux). IFREMER facilities include 72 laboratories and research departments, in those 24 stations and centres which are located all along the metropolitan coast and in the overseas territories, 7 vessels, 2 manned submersibles, a full series of seagoing facilities. |

The French National Sea Centre (Nausicaä) opened to the public in 1991 and its mission is is to raise public awareness of the need for better management of the oceans. The only one if its kind in the world of aquariums and sea centres, it combines interactive visits, temporary exhibitions that area constantly changing, film shows, live television shows and real-time access to all of this on the Website. In 2007 it has welcomed its ten-million visitor and in 2008 launched Planet Nausicaä an interactive, educational and informative multimedia tool on the sea and sustainable development. |
